Mission: The Legal Services Program (LSP) of the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) provides direct legal representation at no charge to persons living with HIV or AIDS.  The LSP provides legal representation for a variety of matters including, but not limited to, estate planning, child custody, child support, guardianships, discrimination, consumer, bankruptcy and insurance disputes.

Mission: The ACLU of Wisconsin is committed to the protection of civil rights and civil liberties in Wisconsin.  Through education and litigation, the ACLU challenges private and governmental conduct limiting the civil rights of individuals and organizations throughout the state.  There are numerous ways in which attorneys can volunteer to assist the ACLU, including representing clients in court on civil liberties issues, drafting appellate briefs on behalf of ACLU clients or the ACLY as amicus curiae in cases of constitutional significance, or by serving on the ACLU’s Lawyers Committee.

Mission:  A broad-based immigration legal service project that assists immigrants and their families in completing immigration forms, translates documents required for the INS, provides legal representation in immigration court, provides education to immigrant groups on naturalization, adjustment of status and family-based immigration.  Private attorneys are asked to accept an occasional pro bono referral in their area of expertise, including providing legal assistance outside the area of immigration.

Mission: Esperanza Unida was organized in 1971 to represent Latino workers in workman's compensation and unemployment insurance hearings. Esperanza Unida continues to provide these services today through the Legal Resource Center. In addition to these services, our on staff attorney also lends part of her time to the Student Support Services to assist Esperanza Unida's students in matters including driver's license reinstatement, utility shut-offs, landlord-tenant matters, and similar legal issues that require resolution to ensure successful economic independence for our students.

Mission:  Exclusive of prisoner petitions, pro bono opportunities exist in the following areas: (1) Social Security litigation (primarily disability claims); (b) Title VII employment cases; and (3) section 1983 Civil Rights cases.  There are also pro bono opportunities regarding federal prisoner litigation, mainly involving section 1983 discrimination claims, Due Process violations, Equal Protection violations, First Amendment claims, and conditions of confinement matters.  Names of interested attorneys are kept on a list, from which judges will ordinarily call the attorney to determine interest in being appointed. The attorney has the opportunity to review the file and submit to the formal appointment order.

Mission:  A non-profit organization dedicated to improving life opportunities and outcomes for children in foster and kinship care.  The Fostering Healing program provides assistance to children who have been victims of crime or violence.  There are also opportunities to help caregivers with guardianship, access to medical care, special education and other issues.  Fostering Family Ties for Children is a joint project with Legal Action of Wisconsin, which provides direct legal assistance to children and their caregivers on a wide range of legal issues.  The Milwaukee Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) enables highly-trained volunteers to act as court-appointed advocates for a child or sibling group in the child welfare system.  This program welcomes attorney volunteers who want to assist with volunteer training or providing occasional legal information to volunteers.

Mission: To coordinate a pro bono appeals program for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.  The Section maintains a list of attorneys who are willing to take appellate appointments.  The courts in turn identify cases involving an indigent litigant and an important legal issue.  The court then appoint an attorney from the Section’s list of volunteers to represent the indigent party free of charge.
