• Children with Special Needs Project: Project in
conjunction with Legal Action of Wisconsin and other
organizations to recruit, train, refer, and support volunteer
lawyers, law students, and other professionals who are
committed to helping children with special education needs in
such areas as truancy, suspension, and expulsion
• Domestic Violence Handbook: First published in
1985, with Spanish translation in 1988. Contains useful
information for battered women, including how to obtain TROs,
other protective actions, and places and telephone numbers
where to get help.
• Elderly Advocacy Programs: Volunteers staff three
local senior centers on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
• Fun Run: Once a year young lawyers run off steam
in the MYLA Fun Run. Walkers as well as runners are encouraged
to participate in this 5K race held each spring
• The Gathering: Sent attorneys every three or four
months to help feed the homeless at St. John's Episcopal
Church
• Habitat for Humanity: MYLA's Habitat for Humanity
committee volunteers help others build their dream home while
"perfecting" their own carpentry skills. The first Thursday of
every month committee members volunteer from 6 to 9 p.m. at
various locations throughout the metro-Milwaukee area
performing any and all carpentry related tasks under the
supervising of Habitat for Humanity members. No skills are
required to come out and have a good time
• Juvenile Code Project: Produced videotapes to
distribute to schools to explain to students the ramifications
of the revised Wisconsin Juvenile Code.
• Laotian/Hmong Project: Provided legal services and
speakers on basic legal issues to persons of Laotian and Hmong
descent at the Hmong Center.
• Literacy Project: Provided volunteers at the
Literacy Center.
• Law Explorer Post: Sponsored a Scout Explorer
post.
• Mental Health Committee: Providing pro bono legal
services and information to individuals with mental illness at
Our Space.
• Mentor Project: More experienced MYLA members
served as mentors for law students and new lawyers.
• Milwaukee Public Schools Projects: Goldilocks Mock
Trial, assisted in setting up student governments Speakers on
Bill of Rights, on being 18, and other topics
• Nuts & Bolts for New Lawyers Seminar
• Programs Committee: This committee serves MYLA's
membership by providing featured luncheon speakers. Past
speakers have included; Wisconsin Supreme Court Justices,
State Bar Presidents, and State and National Legislators
• Playground at Sojourner Truth House: Built
playground at local Sojourner Truth House.
• Solo/Small Firm Practice Seminar: joint project
with Milwaukee Bar Association...
• Summer Law Intern Project: Joint project with
other bar associations and other organization in providing
jobs to area high school students to work at a law firm,
courthouse, etc. for the summer.
