MYLA Current Projects

• Annual Meeting and Elections Committee: The Annual Meeting Committee is responsible for planning MYLA's Annual Meeting which takes place in May. MYLA's Board of Directors for the upcoming year is elected at the Annual Meeting and the incoming president is inaugurated. In addition, the Annual Meeting is an excellent networking event for young lawyers.

• Child Safety School Project:

• Directory Committee: The MYLA Directory Committee produces a new MYLA Directory every other year. The Directory contains each MYLA member's firm name, address, phone, fax and e-mail. The Directory is a great networking tool for young lawyers, as it organizes MYLA members both alphabetically and by areas of practice. The committee is charged with designing the Directory, creating a budget, contacting the printer, and coordinating and verifying each member's entry.

• Historian: MYLA’s Historian gathers past minutes, agendas, newsletters and other documents pertaining to MYLA. The goal is to create a permanent history of the people, projects, and events that have made MYLA the premier legal organization for young lawyers in the Milwaukee area.

• Landlord Tenant Hotline: Automated Hotline addressing common landlord/tenant questions.

• Law Day: Joint project with Milwaukee Bar Association, Association for Women Lawyers, Wisconsin Association of Minority Attorneys, and Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association. Staff volunteer tables at area malls, library, and United Community Center to answer legal information questions

• Membership Committee: The membership committee performs MYLA's public relations work. The MYLA membership committee is responsible for getting the word out about MYLA, which includes recruiting new members, appointing law firm liaisons to promote MYLA activities, recognizing member involvement, and providing information about MYLA activities to members, prospective members and the legal community.

• MYLA Minglings: Seldom do young lawyers get the opportunity to sit down in a small social setting with prominent judges, lawyers and community leaders;MYLA Minglings are a monthly chance for our membership to do just that. MYLA Minglings take place the first Thursday of each month at Milwaukee’s Rock Bottom Brewery and run from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

• Newsletter Committee: The MYLA Brief is a bi-monthly newsletter intended to foster communication between members of the Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association. It is a vehicle for dissemination of information of interest to the membership. The MYLA Brief is an open forum and encourages contributions from MYLA members

• Public Relations Committee: MYLA's Public Relations Committee handles external communications including announcements to the Wisconsin Law Journal, the MBA Messenger, the Wisconsin Lawyer and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. • Social Committee: The MYLA Social Committee provides networking opportunities for young lawyers. Social events include the fall membership drive, and the summer Brewers Tailgate.

• Sojourner Truth House: Sojourner Truth House is a battered women shelter serving Milwaukee's inner city. At the House, domestic violence victims reside with their families in a safe and secure environment. In response to Sojourner's numerous needs for food, clothing, education, and general support, MYLA created the Sojourner Truth House Committee. This committee is dedicated to assist the victims of domestic violence. These victims include the often overlooked children who reside at the shelter. In an effort to assist these overlooked victims, MYLA sponsors day trips for the children to the Milwaukee County Zoo, Marquette University Basketball games, and play dates at local parks. In addition, MYLA constructed Sojourner's playground and donates proceeds from events such as the Barrister's Ball to the shelter.

• Volunteer Lawyers Project co-sponsored with Legal Action of Wisconsin: Project organizes and trains volunteers who represent indigent persons in cases screened, referred, and supervised by Legal Action, in such areas as social security hearings, landlord-tenant matters, unemployment compensation, and family law.

• Web Site Committee: The MYLA Web Site Committee is responsible for maintaining and updating the MYLA Web Site. Information that is posted to the website includes: board roster, committee roster, liaison list, meeting schedule, project listings, The MYLA Brief and the MYLA application.
